Laundry Routine.
The phrase evokes one of two emotions. It either makes a person cringe or rejoice.
A laundry routine sounds regimented and constraining to those of us who would rather fly by the seat of our pants. Isn’t life more easy and fun when you can live carefree, not pinned down by what needs to go in the washer on specific days?
Well, maybe.
And maybe not.
It depends on if you’ve got on clean underwear during those carefree, fun days.
If you’re in the majority of people that do not have a laundry routine, maybe you just need a little convincing to put one in place.
Why a Laundry Routine Makes Your Day-to-Day Life Easier
1.) You don’t have to re-invent the laundry wheel each week.
See if this scenario describes you at all:
It’s Monday Morning. Your laundry pile is literally big enough to climb over. You don’t have time to stay home today and wash this disastrous mountain of dirty clothes. But the kids are out of clean socks come tomorrow morning and the boys’ basketball uniforms are needed tonight. When oh when are you going to get these clothes washed? There’s simply not enough time.
If you have a laundry routine in place, this scenario never has to be your Monday Morning again. Everyone’s clothes are caught up and the basketball uniforms are already hanging in the closet, ready to be worn.
You won’t have to fret and worry about when those clothes will be washed. Your plan is already in place and on auto-pilot. It’s a beautiful thing.
2.) Your laundry is no longer in crisis mode.
For years, my Laundry Life mainly involved only Crisis Mode. Clothes were washed mainly the night (or hours!) before they were needed. I was always behind.
Now that my Laundry Routine is in place, I stay {mainly} in maintenance mode. You know, laundry is like anything else in life: If you can simply maintain it, it never gets overwhelming. But when you let it go and don’t take the time to pay attention to it, it piles up and becomes horribly overwhelming. It is so much easier to maintain, than to spend your time fretting about how you’ll get out of Crisis Mode. Again.
3.) You’ll always have clean underwear.
Really, isn’t this the best reason of all to have a laundry routine in place? Who wants to wear underwear that is only questionably clean?
You won’t look in your sock drawer at 5:30 on Monday morning and realize there are no socks clean. They’ll just be in your drawer. You won’t look on your closet shelf and realize there are no clean t-shirts 10 minutes before your exercise class. They’ll just be there.
Consistently having clean clothes at your disposable is the ultimate in reducing stress. Isn’t it enticing to think of having clean clothes every time you look in your drawer? Put your Laundry Life on auto-pilot today so you can focus your attention on things that really matter.
Do you have a laundry routine in place? If you don’t, what obstacles are preventing you from implementing a routine?

so what is your routine or am i missing something?
I thought the same thing
Mondays I do sheets and towels, Tuesdays are whites, Wednesdays are light colors, Thursdays are darks and Fridays I combine what I have from whites and light colors to make a load and then darker colors and darks to make a last load. I take the weekends off from laundry. This has worked really well for our family of 6 (down to 4 now that 2 are off to college).
I intentionally didn’t add my laundry routine, since that would have made the post too long.
I do a routine mostly like the one here: http://www.mamaslaundrytalk.com/2010/03/15/laundry-routine-stay-at-home-moms/
The short version: I make sure I wash at least one load a day (often two) and that everything is put away by a certain time.
